Herrick District Library Renovation

This renovation reimagined one of Holland’s most beloved community landmarks, transforming the Herrick District Library into a vibrant, light-filled destination for connection, creativity, and learning.

In collaboration with the Lakewood Architecture team, the design focused on accessibility, flexibility, and a renewed sense of place—redefining how the library serves its community today. New study rooms, collaborative zones, a maker space, and dedicated children’s areas were introduced to foster curiosity, creativity, and engagement across generations.

At the heart of the library, a three-story floating staircase becomes the central experience—bathed in natural light and complemented by a fireplace reading nook that invites comfort and gathering. Throughout the project, preserving the mid-century modern character of the existing structure was a guiding principle. The materials palette balances warmth and durability, blending wood tones, textured finishes, and soft neutral hues to create an environment that feels both inspiring and timeless.

Beyond aesthetics, the renovation addressed long-standing structural and circulation challenges, enhancing flow, light, and functionality across the building. The result is a renewed community centerpiece that celebrates craftsmanship and creativity—where every space supports connection, exploration, and a lasting sense of belonging.
